The Fight For Social Security

The current discussion over the future of Social Security may be the most important domestic policy debate of our time. Social Security, established by Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1935, may be the most successful program in the history of our nation. Certainly no program has had such striking success at reducing poverty, particularly among senior women.

President Bush’s plan to privatize Social Security will take away that safety net. His privatization scheme will slash benefits, massively expand our national debt, and won't address the long term financing challenges facing Social Security.

Social Security is a benefit that Americans have paid for throughout their working lives, and the government has a moral obligation to pay it back. There should not be an expiration date on that promise, and I will fight to ensure Congress lives up to its responsibility.
