The Federal Deficit

I believe that we need to make a concerted effort to pay down our ever-expanding publicly owned federal debt. We should all be concerned about the lack of equity and wisdom in President Bush's unbalanced tax cuts and deficit spending. We cannot sacrifice important programs such as Social Security, Medicaid, veterans' services, and Medicare to pay for large tax cuts that benefit the extremely wealthy.

Just four year ago, the Congressional Budget Office projected a 10-year budget surplus of more than $5.6 trillion. Now, we have an estimated budget deficit of $521 billion for 2004 alone.

Instead of balancing the budget, showing fiscal restraint, and pushing legislative proposals to help American get back to work, President Bush and the Republican controlled Congress continue to propose more tax cuts for the wealthy while borrowing against the future of our children. I cannot support fiscal policies that benefit the few while saddling future generations with an enormous federal debt.
